Le thésaurus Pactols est un vocabulaire contrôlé, normalisé et multilingue pour l'archéologie, depuis la préhistoire jusqu'à la période contemporaine et pour les sciences de l'Antiquité sous tous leurs aspects.
Pactols est un réservoir de mots-clés contrôlés et multilingues.
S'il sert historiquement à l'indexation du CCI (Catalogue collectif indexé de Frantiq), sa richesse et son évolutivité ont séduit d'autres communautés. Depuis quelques années, il est utilisé comme référentiel thématique pour des ressources diversifiées (revues académiques, bases de données scientifiques, programmes de valorisation patrimoniale).
Il a été créé par Frantiq (Fédération et Ressources sur l'Antiquité constituée en Groupement de Service du CNRS n°3378), qui rassemble une cinquantaine d’unités mixtes du CNRS, des services du ministère de la Culture, des musées d’archéologie, des collectivités territoriales et d’autres établissements publics.
Il est développé avec le soutien du consortium MASA, Mémoire des archéologues et des sites archéologiques.
La version actuelle est la v. 2.0, de septembre 2022, en version bêta.
Cette version est dédiée à Evelyne Sinigaglia, disparue trop tôt.
Elle comprend deux thésaurus indépendants : Sujets et Lieux

Il est géré avec le logiciel Opentheso, gestionnaire de thesaurus multilingue, développé par la plateforme Technologique WST (Web Sémantique & Thesauri) située à la Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Pactols est conforme aux principes FAIR
Il offre des métadonnées FAIR, Faciles à trouver, Accessibles, Interopérables et Réutilisables. Il devient de ce fait une interface indispensable à la recherche archéologique, interopérable avec les grands référentiels internationaux.
Il est diffusé en Accès libre et mis à disposition selon les termes de la licence ODC Open Database License (ODbL).
Il est téléchargeable en globalité ou en partie et dans plusieurs formats depuis son site Github.
